From the Collection “The Petal of Your Skin: A Cancer Awareness Project”

The Petal of Your Skin is an intimate journey of emotion, purpose, action, and the meaning of life as a human being deals with cancer. It shows how the human body is so delicate that we can even compare it to a petal of a flower. Even though our bodies are weak and fragile, like a petal, its delicateness to the touch does not define it, while its own inner strength and beauty does.

The flowers represent different types of cancer: breast, uterus, colon, throat and skin. The portraits tell the story.

The goal of this project is not only for cancer awareness but also to generate self-awareness. To be aware of not only one’s own strength, but also one’s own self-esteem, which is something important when someone is going through a difficult process in their life, such as a person battling cancer. Cancer has always been one of my greatest fears. Therefore, I have put myself in the shoes of a person who is battling or has battled cancer in order to understand what they have suffered physically and emotionally.

Our skin is fragile but it has a self-healing property. Even though our body heals, the scars remain. So what! Don’t be afraid to show it. Scars show all the emotions, all the strength and all the beauty that has been felt during this process. It shows a being who has lived, who is a survivor. Be proud of your scars. Living is beautiful, being part of this world is beautiful, worthy of a smile, despite the tears and pain you have gone through. Being alive is something to be thankful for. We all have dignity. At the end of it all, scars become a triumph.
